“Smartest Guy in the Building.”

Cognition David-daily

I’ve been in meetings, where I’ve been accused of not being the “smartest” guy in the building, by folks who seemed to think I might be. Its a moot point, except for taking notice of the idea that you should listen and do what the “smartest” guy in the building says. That’s a mistake, because we’re all stupid, including myself, so even if I were the “smartest” guy in the building, so what?

This is the problem with worshiping “intelligence” as if we actually know stuff. Collectively, we have marginal pinnacle accomplishments, that are the sum total of all human achievements to date. Our state of technology and abilities are hardly something to brag on, considering we’ve had all this time to just get to where we are.

And in many ways, we are still completely stupid. Like being ego driven ideologists. Natural, and very very stupid.

So don’t put so much into “smarts” and intelligence. What matters is simple competence and sound values, not intelligence. Learn from doing, do because you need to.

If being the smartest is so remarkable, how come simple things remain beyond us?
